Searching registry books

The Registry Act is relatively antiquated legislation that preserves title records in books. Each book is kept at the Land Registry Office for the county in which the property exists (a “registry division”).

Registry books are now microfilmed and available online. These books will date back to the creation of the county and initial grants of land from the Crown. They will work chronologically through each registered dealing with land, based on the date of registration.

Critical warning

Before conducting any kind of inquiry into title, you must be sure to know the name and identification number of the land registry office (“LRO”) in which the property is located.
